Many people want to quit their job and start their own small business. "I just want a little business of my own," they say. However, that is not the way to make big money.
The surest way to be financially successful in business is to have a big business. Then you will hire lots of people to do the work for you. Right now, you are probably not ready to start a big business. Not to worry - you can get there, if you start out right.
Step #1 is to SAVE
First, I applaud your patience. So many people want to jump straight in, with little knowledge and little preparation. You are smarter than most. You have been working at your chosen career for some time - learning the business. You have been saving - haven't you? Excellent!
Step #2 is to MEET THE RIGHT PEOPLE
Knowing the right people and being known by them, can open doors you would hardly believe. The quality and quantity of your contacts and your relationships will have more to do with your success than any other factor. See what Brian Tracy has to say about meeting the right people and "Leveraging Your Financial Potential."
Step #3 is STUDY
While you are saving and meeting the right people, I suggest you also embark on a course of study. If you have the technical knowledge and experience you need for the type of business you want to start, you have a good foundation on which to build. Depending on the scope of your current job, you may have experience of managing people. What you are probably lacking is experience of marketing. That is the area all prospective business owners need to study, plus some reading on management ( "Good to Great"
" by Jim Collins, is a great book to start with.)
Step 4 is to BUILD A WEBSITE
I suggest you immediately learn how to build a website and start to market something. But, don't think of this as a way to make money - think of it as a way to gain experience in marketing. Use the site to experiment and test the marketing ideas and knowledge you accumulate from your marketing studies. If you make some money while you are doing this, that's good, too, but don't make that the prime purpose, otherwise you will distort the learning benefits.
This will keep you busy for a while and get you focused on things that will make your new business a success. Soon, you will have technical knowledge, marketing knowledge, management knowledge, and experience in all three. You will have saved enough money to start debt-free. These are essential elements of creating a business that is substantial enough to provide a high level of income and a huge amount of personal satisfaction. This is much better than getting stuck in a small, unprofitable business that pays you minimum wage or less.
Step 5 is to DREAM
While you are doing all this, dream. Why, you can dream a little right now! Dream about the business you are going to build. What will be unique about your business? Create some enormous vision - Bill Gates dreamed of "a computer on every desk!" Imagine a vibrant office building like Google's, with excited employees, happy to come to work every day. See your name on the face of that building. What would it feel like to own a "multi-million dollar company?". Imagine it! Dream it into being!
Think about the wildest possibilities of your chosen field and then go a step further into the impossible. Yes, you must dream the impossible, because by the time you have grown your business into the huge, profitable company you want, what is impossible in today's terms will be commonplace then.
That's it! Learn something. Get a job and save. Meet people. Study marketing. Build a website and sell something. Dream big and start big.
Dream big, study big, start big!
If you need help with this, I can help you.
(Okay, Frederick, How can you help?)
